| Keep your favorite jacket clean, fluffy, and performing its best |
Washing your down jacket might seem daunting, but it's easier than you think! Skipping the dry cleaner and following these simple steps will restore your jacket's loft and warmth without the hassle.
What You'll Need
A Down-Specific Detergent (This is essential! Regular detergent can damage the down).
A bathtub or a large sink/container.
Lukewarm water.
Two large, absorbent towels.
A dryer (optional but highly recommended).
2-3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls (The secret to restoring fluffiness!).

The 4-Step Washing Process
Step 1: Prep Your Jacket
Empty all pockets and close all zippers, buttons, and Velcro straps. This prevents snags and damage.
Pre-treat stains by applying a small amount of your down wash directly to grimy areas like the cuffs or collar. Gently rub it in and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Step 2: The Gentle Wash
Draw a lukewarm bath in your tub with lukewarm water (not hot!). Add the correct amount of down detergent and swish it around to create suds.
Submerge and Squish! Place your jacket in the water. Gently press and squeeze the fabric to work the soapy water through the down. Don't wring, scrub, or twist the jacket, as this can tear the down clusters or fabric.
Step 3: The All-Important Rinse
Drain the dirty water. Gently press the water out of your jacket.
Rinse thoroughly by refilling the tub with clean lukewarm water or using a gentle stream from a showerhead. Continue to press and squeeze to flush out all soap.
Repeat until the water runs completely clear with no more suds. Soap residue is the #1 enemy of loft, so be patient here!
Step 4: Drying for Maximum Fluff (The Key Step!)
Recommended Method: Tumble Dry with Tennis Balls
Remove excess water: Lay the jacket on a large towel, roll it up, and press firmly to absorb moisture. You may need to do this with a second dry towel.
Into the dryer: Place the damp jacket in the dryer with the clean tennis balls or dryer balls. The balls will bounce around and help break up down clumps.
Dry on Low Heat: Use a low heat or delicate setting. This process can take 2-3 hours. Be patient-high heat can damage the fabric and down.
Break up clumps: Pause the dryer every hour or so to shake and fluff the jacket. Manually pull apart any clumps you feel.
Alternative Method: Air Drying
If you don't have a dryer, lay the jacket flat or hang it in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
Avoid direct sunlight.
You must be vigilant! Shake and fluff the jacket vigorously every few hours as it dries to prevent the down from clumping. This method takes much longer and may not restore loft as effectively.
How to tell it's truly dry: The jacket must be completely dry to the touch, with no damp spots whatsoever, and the down should be soft and evenly distributed with no clumps.
A Quick "Do Not" List:
❌ DO NOT use regular detergent, bleach, or fabric softener.
❌ DO NOT wring or twist your jacket to remove water.
❌ DO NOT dry with high heat or direct sunlight.
Once your jacket is completely dry, give it one final, vigorous shake! Store it hanging in a closet, not stuffed in its sack, to maintain its loft for your next adventure.
Proper care will extend the life of your jacket for years to come. Happy washing!
