The promise of custom clothing is unparalleled: a garment that moves with you, flatters your unique form, and feels like it was always meant to be yours. The foundation of this promise isn't just expert craftsmanship-it's precise measurements.
For many, the idea of self-measuring is the biggest hurdle to entering the world of bespoke. This guide demystifies the process. With a soft measuring tape, a mirror, and about 15 minutes, you can capture the key data needed to create your perfect fit. Remember, we are here to help every step of the way. Our support team is always available to review your numbers.
Before You Begin: Essential Preparation
You Will Need:
A soft, flexible cloth measuring tape (not a metal tailor's tape).
Well-fitting, thin base layer clothing (like a t-shirt and leggings or slim-fitting underwear). Avoid bulky sweaters or jeans.
A full-length mirror.
A notepad and pen, or your phone, to record measurements as you go.
An optional helper for hard-to-reach spots like the shoulder.
Golden Rules:
Stand Naturally: Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart, arms relaxed at your sides. Don't suck in your stomach or puff out your chest.
Keep the Tape Snug, Not Tight: The tape should rest smoothly against your body without indenting the skin or leaving slack. You should be able to fit a finger underneath comfortably.
Measure Twice, Record Once: For accuracy, take each measurement at least twice to ensure consistency.
The 5-Step Visual Measurement Guide
Follow these steps in order for a logical and complete process.
Step 1: The Core Torso – Chest, Waist, and Hips
These are the fundamental dimensions for any top or jacket.
A. Chest: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, typically across the nipple line. Ensure the tape is level under your arms and across your shoulder blades.
Pro Tip: Keep your arms down; don't stretch the tape excessively tight.
B. Natural Waist: Find the narrowest part of your torso, usually above your navel and below your rib cage. It's where your body creases when you bend to the side. Measure around this point.
Common Error: Measuring at the belt line or hip level.
C. Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your seat/buttocks. Ensure the tape is level and parallel to the floor.
Step 2: The Frame – Shoulder and Back
This step is crucial for how a jacket or shirt hangs and for freedom of movement.
D. Shoulder Width: This is easiest with a helper. Measure from the bony tip (acromion) of one shoulder, across the back, to the tip of the other shoulder. The tape should follow the natural curve of your back.
Visual Guide: Imagine the seam where a shirt sleeve meets the body.
E. Back Width: Place the tape across the back, about 6-8 inches below the base of your neck, from the crease of one underarm to the other.
Step 3: The Sleeve – Length and Circumference
Achieve the perfect sleeve that allows movement without excess fabric.
F. Sleeve Length: With your arm slightly bent at your side, start the tape at the tip of your shoulder (where you measured shoulder width). Run it down over your elbow to your wrist bone (the ulnar styloid process).
For Jackets: Measure to where you want the cuff to end, typically at the base of the thumb.
G. Bicep Circumference: Measure around the fullest part of your upper arm, between your shoulder and elbow. Keep your arm relaxed.
H. Wrist Circumference: Measure around the bony prominence of your wrist.
Step 4: The Neck & Collar
For shirts and jackets meant to be worn with a collar buttoned.
I. Neck Circumference: Place the tape around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit. Leave enough room to comfortably slip two fingers between the tape and your neck.
Step 5: The Garment Length
Determines the overall coverage and silhouette.
J. Front & Back Length: Start at the base of your neck (the prominent 7th cervical vertebra) and measure straight down your back to your desired length (e.g., to the waist, hip, or mid-thigh). For front length, measure from the same neck point down the center of your chest.
